Riding a motorcycle is an exhilarating recreational activity, though it can be quite dangerous. Hundred of accidents occur each year in the state of Nebraska, some leaving cyclists injured, and others dead. However, there are safety measures that can be taken to increase the chances of leaving a motorcycle accident unscathed. Wearing protective gear and helmets and paying proper attention to the rules of the road is essential when assuring the safety of yourself and other motorists.

When your skin comes into contact with asphalt or graveled surfaces, it can do severe damage, sometimes leaving permanent scarring. Leather jackets, gloves, pants, and/or chaps are designed to protect your skin from the harsh surface of asphalt. Studies show that leather is approximately 20 times more effective at protecting your skin than jeans.

Cautionary Driving Tips

It is advisable to drive defensively at all times. Practice an increased level of alertness at intersections, because about 70 percent of motorcycles-vehicle accidents occur there. Slow down more to double check for traffic at intersections where vision is obstructed by shrubbery, parked vehicles, and/or buildings. Also, be cautious of vehicles that may turn unexpectedly. Be courteous to other motorists and cyclists.

Check rearview mirrors prior to changing lanes or stopping. Stopping quickly without checking rear traffic may result in a rear-end collision. When changing lanes, always signal properly and perform a visual check of your destination lane prior to changing.

Be cautious of dangerous road surfaces and traffic ahead to anticipate road hazards and problems. Road hazards that pose a minor threat to automobiles, such as potholes, oil slicks, puddles, debris and other objects on the roadway, ruts, uneven pavement, and railroad tracks, can be a major hazard to motorcyclists. Also, manhole covers and painted roadway markings can be extremely slippery when wet. Be cautious when approaching such conditions.
